Yanshan University (YSU), co-constructed by the People’s Government of Hebei Province, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, is a national key university supported by Hebei Province in the development of national first-class universities and world first-class disciplines. The University is also the member of the Cooperation Consortium of Beijing High Technology Universities.

YSU campus covers an area of 4,000 mu(or 267 hectares) with a total space of 1,250,000m². University has 40,000 students and 3200 faculty and staff, 2200 of whom are full-time teachers including 510 professors and 681 associate professors (528 of them are doctoral supervisors). YSU has 3 academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 member of the Discipline Appraisal Group of the State Council, 7 distinguished professors from the Ten-thousand Talents Program, 19 distinguished professors of the "Changjiang Scholars Program”,chair professors of the "Changjiang Scholars Program", and young scholars selected under the "Changjiang Scholars Program", 28 recipients of the National Outstanding Youth Fund and Excellent Young Scientists Fund.

YSU has 12 postdoctoral research stations, 14 first level disciplines authorized to offer doctoral degree, 3 categories of professional doctorate, 30 first level disciplines authorized to offer master degree,19 categories of professional master degree, and 73 undergraduate programs. With an established engineering-based disciplinary framework integrating other 8 academic disciplines including, economics, law, education, literature, science, management, arts, and interdiscipline, YSU has 5 national key disciplines and 16 provincial key disciplines, and 5 disciplines (engineering, materials science, chemistry, computer science, and environmental science and ecology) are listed in the global top 1% of ESI, among which the engineering discipline has entered the top 1‰. In the fifth round of discipline assessment, YSU has made breakthrough progress. The disciplines of mechanical engineering and materials science and engineering have ranked among the top in Chinese Universities, and some disciplines have achieved a qualitative leap over.

YSU has established national-level scientific and technological innovation platforms: the State Key Laboratory of Metastable Materials Science and Technology, the National Key Laboratory of Lifting machinery Key Technology, the National Engineering Research Center for Equipment and Technology of Cold Strip Rolling, the National-Local Joint Engineering Research Center for Advanced Manufacture Forming Technology and Equipment; the National Innovation Talent Training Demonstration Base, the National International Science and Technology Cooperation Base, CAST Overseas Talent Workbase, the National Professional Technical Personnel Continuing Education Base, the National-Level Maker Space, and the University Science and Technology Achievement Transformation and Technology Transfer Base; the Provincial-Ministerial Joint Innovation Center, 4 Key Laboratories and Engineering Research Centers of the Ministry of Education, 73 Provincial-Ministerial Science and Technology Innovation Platforms and 26 Provincial-Ministerial Social Science Research Bases; the National University Science and Technology Park, Yanshan University Press. It is a National Technology Transfer Demonstration Institution, a pilot unit in the National Science and Technology Service Industry, and one of the first batch of National Intellectual Property Pilot Universities.
YSU has reached an international advanced level in such fields as the whole-set heavy machinery and equipment, the metastable materials and technology, the theory and technology of parallel robots, the technology of fluid transmission and electro-hydraulic servo-systems, the theory and technology of industrial automation, the technology of precision plasticity figuration, the technology of large forging and heat treatment, the technology of mechanical structure and materials under extreme conditions, etc. Since 2000, the university has won 20 national scientific and technological awards consecutively, including 2 first prizes and 9 second prizes of National Prize for Progress in Science and Technology, 5 second prizes of State Technological Invention Awards, and 4 second prizes of State Natural Science Awards. The university has undertaken over 1300 national research projects, including those funded by the 973 Programs, the 863 Programs, National Key Research and Development Program, as well as the National Natural Science Foundation and the National Social Science Foundation. In 2013 and 2014, two of them were awarded as the Top 10 National Scientific Development of China and the Top 10 Scientific Development of China’s Institutions of Higher Learning.

The university has strategically established four research institutes and four centers: the Institute of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, the Institute of Marine Science and Engineering, the Institute of Health Care Industry Technology, the Institute of Science and Technology for Carbon Peaking and Carbon Neutrality Goals; the Center for High Pressure Science, the Center of Nano Energy Materials Research, the Center of Specialized Carriage Equipment Research, and Center for Advanced Structural Materials. The establishment of these new research institutions will play a significant role in building disciplinary excellence, cultivating top talents, leading technological innovation, and promoting industrial development.

YSU actively promotes the opening-up of education to the outside world and builds a high-quality global core partnership network. The university has established cooperative relationships with over 100 high-level universities and scientific research institutions in more than 30 countries and regions to carry out a wide range of programs such as joint education, teacher exchanges and scientific research.
