YSU’s Project Firstly Approved as Basic Science Center Project of NSFC

Recently, "High-Pressure Control of Materials", led by Academician Tian Yongjun of YSU and applied as the Basic Science Center Project of National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), officially obtained the funding opportunity, with a direct funding of CNY60 million. This is the first approved such project of YSU, also representing a major historic breakthrough in Hebei Province. The basic science center project is a kind of project with the highest positioning and the maximum funding in the talent funding system of NSFC. The approval shows the tremendous strength of YSU in the field of basic science, and is also a milestone for the development of S&T undertakings of YSU.

A high-level research team is formed by YSU in conjunction with Jilin University and Zhejiang University for the “High-Pressure Control of Materials”, the basic science center project. In terms of research content, the project starts with the new high toughness nano twin diamond material independently developed by YSU, which has Chinese brand label and is twice as hard as natural diamond at present. On the basis of giving full play to the advantages and research characteristics of the State Key Laboratory of Metastable Materials Preparation Science and Technology and other platforms in YSU, and aiming at the international high-pressure science frontier and the major national strategic needs, the project team will carry out interdisciplinary integration research for the relevant major scientific issues and technical bottlenecks. After the implementation of the project, the "Center" will attract and unite outstanding S&T talents in different fields and disciplines, form an academic highland for high-pressure scientific research and personnel training with important international influence, and strive to make substantial contributions to the independent control of domestic high-performance materials.

The establishment of Basic Science Center Project of NSFC aims to support the researchers in a relatively long-term and stable way, for breakthroughs in scientific frontiers, deep cross-integration of disciplines, and the international leading original research results. It has been implemented on a pilot basis since 2016, and about 17 projects are funded every year. As of September this year, only over 20 colleges and universities in China have obtained the approval of the basic science center project. The approval on basic science center project of YSU consolidates confidence for the "double first-class" construction and connotative high-quality development with actual achievements.
