On October 21,the meeting to celebrate the 110th Anniversary of the Western Returned Scholars Association was held in Beijing. Xi Jinping,General Secretary of the Communist Party of China, President and Chairman of the Central Military Commission sent a letter of congratulation to convey the Party Central Committee’s warm congratulations tothe Western Returned Scholars Association. Wang Huning,Member of StandingCommitteeofthePoliticalBureauoftheCPC and CPPCC Chairman, attended the meeting and delivered a speech. Professor Wang Limin, Chairman oftheWestern Returned Scholars Association of Yanshan University, participated in the meeting as a representative of western returned scholars.

In the letter, Xi pointed out that theWestern Returned Scholars Associationis a people’s organization of mass character, highintellectualityand united front.Over the past 110 years after its founding, it has been making great contributions to uniting overseas Chinese students to maintain patriotictraditionand serve the people.. Xi stressed that, on the new journey, theWestern Returned Scholars Associationshould reinforce political feature, advanced nature and mass character, further play the roles as the talent pool of overseas Chinese students, think tank offering advices and suggestions, and fresh force in folk diplomacy, strengthen ideological guidance and organizational construction, thus absorbing talents for the development of Party and national career and generating massive innovation force. He also expressed hope that overseas Chinese students and scholars will carry forward the patriotic tradition, serve the people, stay confident and seek self-improvement, forge ahead, maintain anopenand inclusive mind, devote to the eraof innovation,entrepreneurshipand creation, boost domestic and foreign cultural exchange and mutual learning, and compose the chapter of glorious life in the context of advancing the construction of a great power and furthering national rejuvenation.
In his speech, Wang Huning pointed out that, General Secretary Xi Jinping’s congratulation letter to the 110th anniversary oftheWestern Returned Scholars Associationsufficiently confirmed positive contributions made bytheWestern Returned Scholars Association, thoroughly illustrated the missions and tasks oftheWestern Returned Scholars Association, raised earnest expectation towards overseas Chinese students and scholars, and providedfundamentalbasis for the work related to overseas Chinese students and scholars in the new era. We should thoroughly learn the letter and earnestly practice the requirements.

Wang Limin said that he feels it both an honor and a responsibility to participatein themeeting as a representative,becausenumerous masters and scholars have emerged from theWestern Returned Scholars Associationthroughout the period from its founding during the democratic revolution to the present new era.After the meeting, hewill continueto seriously learn and study the meeting spirits, implement and practice the meeting requirements. He also mentioned that Yanshan University will held the Symposium of Yanshan University’sWestern Returned Scholars Associationin the near future to focus on how to truly fulfill the three basic functions of“talent pool of overseas Chinese students, think tank offering advices and suggestions, and fresh force in folk diplomacy”in an effort to boost the construction of“first-rate universities and disciplines”, support local economic and social development, thereby contributing more to writing chapter of Hebei in China’s modernization drive.
Professor Wang Limin, who studied inArizona State Universityfrom 2001 to 2007, is a doctoral supervisor of School ofMaterialsScience and Engineering, Yanshan University. He won the honor ofspecially-appointed professorof“the Yangtze River Scholar”in 2019, and now works as aStanding Committee Member of the Party Committeeand Vice President of Yanshan University.
Atotal of 10 Hebei representatives participated in the meeting, and Wang Limin was one of the 2 invited representatives from Hebei institutions of higher learning.
