On June 21-22, the “Second Sailing Regatta for Diplomats in China” jointly organized by Beijing Service Bureau for Diplomatic Missions, Qinhuangdao Municipal Government, and Hebei Port Group was held in Qinhuangdao. More than 70 diplomats from 13 countries (including Mauritius, Argentina and Bulgaria) and international organizations participated in the event. YSU School of Foreign Studies assigned 25 students as volunteers to provide high-quality interpretation services for the competition.

The volunteer recruitment and selection work was led by the Communist Youth League Committee and fully supported by the School of Foreign Studies. A volunteer team of 25 selected foreign language major students with solid language and interpretation skills was set up based on the language service requirements of the event.

During the event, 20 volunteers acting as accompanying interpreters accompanied the diplomatic teams on board the sailboats for the competition. Their fluent and accurate interpretation enabled Chinese captains to communicate with multinational diplomatic sailors without barriers. They also accompanied the diplomats to experience the production process of traditional Chinese food and handicrafts such as candied haws, snow skin moon cakes, dough sculptures and tie-dyeing, providing English explanations to help foreign guests appreciate the charm of traditional Chinese culture. The remaining 5 volunteers served as accompanying interpreters at the welcome banquet, offering meticulous and thoughtful language services to effectively bridge communication between Chinese and foreign guests. The YSU volunteer team demonstrated the vibrant spirit of YSU youth to foreign guests with their enthusiasm, linguistic proficiency, professional skills and excellent adaptability. They received unanimous recognition from the organizer and foreign diplomats in China.

Going forward, the Communist Youth League Committee will actively enforce YSU’s big ideological and political education pattern of “multi-directional forging”, continue to make full use of large-scale competition volunteer service platforms, and leverage the education function of student volunteer service through practices, aiming for the young people to develop character, contribute to society, and serve the people through voluntary service.
