Academic Report: Study on Application of FTS (Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis) Catalyst Technology in Alternative Clean Liquid Fuel

06 Jun , 2017

Lecturer: Mingsheng Luo

Time: 9:30 am, Jun. 7th(Wednesday), 2017

Venue: Lecture Hall, 18th Floor, the Century Building, East Campus

About the lecturer: Mingsheng Luo, Professor of Beijing Institute of Petrochemical Technology, Director of Research Institute of Applied Energy and Environment, doctoral dissertation supervisor of Beijing University of Chemical Technology and Beijing University of Technology. He received his Ph. D. in Chemical Engineering from Auburn University, USA, and worked at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) and the University of Kentucky, Center for Applied Energy Research (CAER). He was a senior researcher of the former University of Dayton Air Force Research Laboratory (UDRI / AFRL) before coming back to China, and he established the alternative aviation kerosene and catalytic research laboratory of the AFRL, focusing on the research and development of coal chemical, oil refining and environmental catalysts. With 9years’working experience in process planning and project management at the former Seventh Design Institute of theMinistry of Chemical Industry, he has participated in a number of large and medium-sized chemical design projects, and won the National Science and Technology Progress Awards. Besides, he also led million tons of FTS process, thousands tons of FTS catalysts and process package development for Shenhua Group. Furthermore, he has published more than 60 academic papers in international professional magazines, and more than 20 patent applications. And he was selected into the sixth batch of the nationalThousand Talents Plan, editorial board in chemistry and chemical engineering ofThousand Talents Plan Magazine. He is the judge ofnational Thousand Foreign Experts Plan, major science and technology projects and Chang Jiang (Yangtze River) scholars.

About the lecture:This lecture will briefly introduce some basic concepts of oil production from coal, indirect liquefaction process of coal, and the research and development of catalysts. It will also explore the effects of different FTS process options, the different catalyst selection on product selectivity, and future trends. In addition, water issues, sewage treatment problems, carbon emission tax, and the future development of shale gas will also have a significant impact on the living space of the coal-oil industry. The lecturer will explore the technical problems of FTS catalyst in China and the difficulties faced by the currentindustry in the last part.
