Academic Report: Exploitation and Utilization of Marine Biological Resources and Ecological Civilization

03 Jul , 2017

Lecturer: Song Sun

Time: 16:00 pm July 3rd(Monday), 2017

Venue: 320, Engineering Center, East Campus

About the Lecturer: Mr. Sun, born in December 1959, is Ph.D., researcher, doctoral dissertation Supervisor, Dean of Ocean Institute of University of Chinese Academy of Sciences. He was Director of Institute of Oceanography, Chinese Academy of Sciences from Oct. 2006 to Mar. 2017. Engaged in the study of marine ecology and biological oceanography, he has been on 3 scientific expeditions to Antarctic. He, for the very first time, internationally proved that Antarctic krill have negative growth in natural environment and established a method for calculating the degree of Krill negative growth by using the ratio between the diameter of the compound eye and the length of the body. He took thelead in doing research on the key species and functional groups of zooplankton in the field of coastal ecosystem evolution and ecosystem disaster research in China. He also made a breakthrough in the outbreak mechanism of disastrous jellyfish and related researches which were later reported by Nature and Science respectively. In deep-sea exploration and research, he and his team completed the first scientific project in the field of Marine Exploration—the building of research ship “Science” for comprehensive exploration and research of deep-sea extreme environment and marine life. He undertook dozens of research projects of all levels. In recent years, he organized the implementation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Strategic Pilot Special Science and Technology Project (Class A) ---Tropical Western Pacific Ocean System Material and Energy Exchange and Impact, and completed the National 973 Program---Key Process, Mechanism and Ecological Environment Effect of Jellyfish Outbreak in China as the chief scientist. He was the leader of a key project sponsored by National Natural Science Foundation of China and the top design expert of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Group Project.

He has published more than 200 research papers in major journals at home and abroad; 7 monographs, including: Biological Oceanography, Gulf Ecology Theory and Practice, Step into the Deep Sea, and Marine Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics of the Northwest Pacific Ocean; and 3 special issues, such as Hydrobiologia. He has won the National Marine Engineering Technology Special Award, Outstanding Science and Technology Achievement Award by Chinese Academy of Sciences, National Marine Science and Technology Achievement Award; and enjoys special government allowances from the State Council. Now he is Vice President of the Scientific Committee on Ocean Research (SCOR), President of SCOR-China, a member of Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) science and technology expert group, Director of Chinese Society for Oceanology and Limnology, Deputy Director of Chinese Society for Oceanography, and Deputy Director of China Society of Fisheries.
