Academic Report: The Linguistic Melody of Chinese Poetry

About the Lecturer:Zeng Yongyi is now the chair professor of the Ministry of Education of PRC, the fellow of Academia Sinica of Taiwan, chair professor ofShih Hsin UniversityandNational Taiwan University, and invited as Hu Shi chair professor. Prof. Zeng has been the visiting professor at following universities: Peking University, Xiamen University, Wuhan University,Sun Yat-sen University, Shandong University, Henan University, Henan Normal University, University of Hong Kong,National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts, and Ruhr-Universität Bochumamong others. He once was the visiting scholar at Harvard University,University of Michigan,Stanford UniversityandLeiden University. Prof. Zeng has won National Award of Literature and Arts and Sun Yat-sen Award of Literature and Arts.

Prof. Zeng’s main academic research and teaching isChineseopera, pop literature, verse and folk arts are the secondary interests. He has published 12monographsincludingThe Chinese Traditional Theatre,The Construction of the Foundation of Opera andClarion,TheResearchon the Evolution of Opera Types,New Exploration on Chinese Opera Tune, andPop Literature Introduction. He has also published 7 prose works likeUnstrained, 9 scripts of the Kunqu Opera likeThe Butterfly Lovers, 8 Beijing Operas such asZheng Chenggong and Taiwan, and three operas such asXiangyu and Yujias well as Yu OperaEmpress Dowager CixiandConsortZhenand Taiwan OperaTao Kanxians Mother.

About the Lecture:Chinese traditionalpoetry innaturebelongs toverse, which includes many ancient literary styles such as poetry,Song poems, andYuan Qu, whichoriginated from ancient Chinese music melody andlinguisticmelody. The Chineselanguageitself has a rich sense of rhythm. Thecombination of rhythm and music forms the main body of ancient Chinese poetry—verse, which hasbeen theorthodox ofChinese classical literature. Therefore, understanding the linguisticpropertyof Chinese poetry isthekey to understanding Chinese classical poetry. Prof.Zeng will analyze and comment on thelinguisticmelody of Chinese poetry from.
