Lecturer profile:
Prof. Cao Xiren graduated from the Department of Modern Physics at the University of Science and Technology of China in 1967 and received MA degree in Engineering and PhD degree in Applied Mathematics from Harvard University in 1982 and 1984 respectively. He was a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University from 1984 to 1986. He once taught at Harvard University and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, and was a visiting professor at the University of Maryland College Park and Notre Dame. In 1993, he joined the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology as a professor. In 2005, he became the first batch Chair Professor in the Department of Electronics and Computer Engineering, and later served as the Director/Manager, Chief Engineer/ Consultant Engineer of Digital Equip Corp. Since July 2010, he worked as a Chair Professor at Shanghai Jiaotong University.
Prof. Cao Xiren has made ground-breaking work in the field of perturbation analysis of discrete event systems and sensitivity-based optimization of stochastic systems, and is the co-founder of the perturbation analysis of discrete event systems. Its main achievements (2009) won the Second Prize of the National Natural Science of China (the first winner) and the Outstanding Service Award of IFAC. He was granted the Distinguished Conference Paper Award from the IEEE Control Systems Society in 1987, the Distinguished Literature Award from the American Academy of Management Sciences in 1990, and the Distinguished Service Award from the International Federation of Automatic Controls (IFAC) in 2008.
Prof. Cao Xiren is IEEE Fellow and IFAC Fellow. He has served on the IEEE Fellow Evaluation Committee of the IEEE Control Systems Society, Chairman of the System and Signal Coordination Committee of the International Federation of Automatic Control Systems (IFAC), and the International Union for Self Control. Member of Technical Bureau, Chair of IEE Control Systems Network and Communication Technology Committee, Chairman of IFAC Discretionary Event Dynamic System Technology Committee, Vice Chairman of Asian Control Federation, Vice Chairman of IEEE RA/CS Hong Kong Joint Sub-Commission.
Prof. Cao Xiren is editor-in-chief and associate editor of several major international journals, including Discrete Event Dynamic Systems: Theory and Applications (Editor), Automatica, IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology.
