Speaker Introduction

Dr. Cang Shuang is a professor and Doctoral supervisor. She obtained her Bachelor of Science degree from Heilongjiang University as an outstanding graduate, Master of Science degree from Imperial College and King’s College as an outstanding graduate. She received her Ph.D. degree from the University of Dundee, Aberdeen, England in early 1997. Prof. Cang has theoretical and practical experiences in interdisciplinary (social science and natural science). Prof. Cang Shuang once worked in British companies, civil institutions and universities. She has worked for a leading software company in the UK and has been involved in the development of statistical software for the pharmaceutical industry and research laboratories. She has also served as a senior analyst for the UK Government Health and Safety Research Laboratory and the National Government Department. She currently manages and participates in EU and other funded projects, such as the ongoing health research project funded by the European Commission, with a total value of more than two million Euros: in the state of healthy tourism, the impact of the green microenvironment on the elderly. She also published some papers with the leading journals such as European Journal of Operations Research, Decision Support Systems, Expert Systems and Applications, IEEE Journal of Biomedical and Health Informatics, and IEEE Journal of Neurological and Rehabilitation Engineering.

The health and well-being of the elderly, digital health care for the elderly is one of her main research directions. In the digital medical research of the elderly, technologies such as data mining, artificial intelligence, pattern recognition, multivariate statistics, prediction, segmentation and economic impact are adopted. In the study of the improvement of the health and well-being of the elderly, conceptual models of social sciences are used.

The World Population Report predicts that life expectancy at birth will rise from 71 years in 2010-2015 to 77 years in 2045-2050 (United Nations, 2017). Most countries face the problem of preparing their health systems which are ready to adapt to the demographic changes. Therefore, when the elderly live alone, family members, caregivers or community centers may be concerned about their health, daily life and safety of the elderly. Providing regular care for the elderly may mean additional costs and heavy burden on everyday life. As a result, the ageing problem poses many challenges for families, communities and society. In recent years, assistive technologies for the elderly have emerged to provide alternative solutions to help them maintain or improve their quality of life. This paper studies and discusses the current research work and future prospects from the perspective of science, as well as the innovation of health care based on ICT, especially the mode of specific activities and long-term behavior of the elderly, to improve the quality of life of the elderly.
