The National Chou Pei-yuan Mechanical Competition for College Students began in 1980s. Commissioned by the Department of Higher Education and organized biennially by the Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (CSTAM) and Chou Pei-yuan Foundation, it is a scientific and technological activity for college students. The 11thcompetition, lasting for three hours and a half, was composed of 2 parts: basic questions and improvement questions.

The 11thcompetition was hosted by the editorial board of Mechanics in Engineering and the Education Committee of CSTAM, and co-hosted by Science Popularization Committee of CSTAM, Hunan University, and Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics. The number of registered students reached another new high---23646 examinees from more than 300 universities in 30 provinces, municipalities and autonomous administrative regions.

In order to discover the talents for mechanics innovation and arouse young students’interest in learning mechanics, School of Civil Engineering and Mechanics widely publicized the competition and actively encouraged students to participate in the early stage of the competition. Besides, professional teachers in mechanics were organized to conduct a one-month intensive training program for the applicants, aiming to train them to analyze and solve practical problems. The competition provides young students with a stage to demonstrate their basic knowledge and skills, helps to promote the reform and construction of mechanics courses in universities and colleges, and further creates a good learning atmosphere at YSU.
