[News from News Center] From Oct. 28thto 29th, sponsored by Hebei Education Department, and hosted by YSU, the Hebei Session of the 5th(2017) Robot Competition for Universities in North China Provinces (Municipalities, Autonomous Regions) was held at YSU gymnasium, East Campus. Prof. Yongsheng Zhao – YSU Vice President, Ming Gao –Deputy researcher of Higher Education Department under Hebei Education Department, Prof. Wenbo Chen - technical chairman of the competition committee and professor from School of Automation under Beijing Information Science and Technology University, Hailong Jin – Director of YSU Academic Affairs Office, and Prof. Jiadong Ren – Dean of YSU School of Information Science and Engineering (School of Software) attended the opening ceremony, which was hosted by Hailong Jin.
It was the first time to hold the Session of Robot Competition for Universities in North China Provinces (Municipalities, Autonomous Regions) in Hebei, with “Competition and Cooperation, Create the Future Together” as the theme, aiming to promote the exchanges and cooperation among robot research teams in Hebei universities and the training of creative talents. This competition provided students with an inter-discipline platform for robot science and technology innovation and exchange promotion, a stage to use comprehensive theory to solve practical problems and display their talents, a good training of students’ independent innovation awareness, hands-on ability and teamwork spirit.
The competition attracted more than 60 teams (totaling more than 200 people) from 22 universities in Hebei, including Yanshan University, North China Electric Power University, Shijiazhuang Tiedao University, Hebei Normal University, Hebei University of Science and Technology, Hebei Agricultural University, Hebei GEO University, etc..

This competition is full of fun, covering seven categories including creative design, Wushu competition, dance competition, competitive sports (penalty, golf, track and field, shooting) for humanoid robots, aerial robot challenge, underwater robot challenge and intelligent logistics robot challenge. According to the actual performance, the First, Second and Third Prize were selected, and the excellent ones will be recommended to participate in the Final of the 5thRobot Competition for Universities in North China Provinces (Municipalities, Autonomous Regions).

In order to increase the academic atmosphere of the competition, the Organization Committee invited Prof. Guosheng Huang, the Director of the Robotics Society of Taiwan and professor from National Sun Yat-sen University (Taiwan), to give an academic report entitled “Reinforcement Learning and Its Applications in IRIS Lab”, in which, Prof. Huang explained professional knowledge in a simple, accurate and comprehensive way, and his humorous and vivid style also impressed the present teachers and students. After the meeting, Prof. Huang had a cordial exchange with audience on the problems related to machine learning.

In this competition, YSU coordinated with related Schools and functional departments. School of Information Science and Engineering (School of Software) is mainly responsible for preparing props, organizing guiding committee, inviting experts, training volunteers, and the service and sponsorship; Academic Affairs Office is responsible for application and on-site registration; and School of Physical Educationprovides venue. The work above has won the unanimous praise of the teachers and students in Hebei Province.
