06 Jun , 2018

[News from the News Center] On the morning of May 30th, YSU Vice President Zhang Fucheng presided over the meeting to hear reports from the delegation visiting Portuguese and Italian colleges and universities. The head of the delegation, the Director of the International Cooperation Division Teng Guosheng presented the report. All members of the delegation attended the meeting as well as relevant staff of the International Cooperation Division. With the continuous advancement of the “Double First-class” construction of YSU, a partnership with universities in developed countries in Europe has been developed as a strategic support point for expanding the space for international exchanges and cooperation, and improving the level of international education. YSU recently sent a delegation consisting of heads of relevant schools to visit many universities in Portugal and Italy and achieved fruitful results in this respect.

At the report, Teng Guosheng said that the delegation visiting University of Aveiro, Portugal received the warm reception from Vice President Prof. Paulo M.M. Vila Real. Paulo introduced their top disciplines, major scientific research achievements and technology transfer. He expressed his willingness to cooperate with YSU in engineering education and scientific research. After meeting with the heads and some professors of the Department of Civil Engineering and Department of Mechanical Engineering, the delegation conducted in-depth consultations on teachers and students exchanges, scientific research cooperation, and cooperation in joint education schemes.

The following consensuses were reached: both parties will launch some projects based on the cooperation agreement, the agreements involve following items: starting graduate student exchange or joint education programs; providing facilities for academic visits and supporting graduate students with their supervisors in academic visiting; organizing scientific research teams and applying for scientific research projects; and launching some undergraduate or postgraduate education programs in Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering disciplines and diploma should be granted from both sides .

Teng Guosheng detailed the delegation’s visit to the University of Trieste in Italy. The delegation believed that the University of Trieste possessed a strong education capacity. The university is known for its engineering majors and the discipline setting is similar to YSU. The number of scientific research results ranks first in Italy with annual scientific research fund of 700 million CNY. However, the University of Trieste communicated little with Chinese universities due to historical reasons. When receiving the delegation, Prof. Renato Gennaro, the new Vice President in charge of the foreign affairs of the university, said that there was a lot of cooperation space between the two universities. He hoped that this visit would be the beginning for opening the all-round and pragmatic exchanges and cooperation on teaching, scientific research and the development of the faculty. He asked the Office of International Affairs, the Department of Engineering and Architecture and the Faculty of Grammar and Foreign Languages to draft a MOU on the cooperation between the two parties as soon as possible. We have received the English version draft of the MOU and the implementation agreement. The International Cooperation Division and the Legal Affairs Office are reviewing its contents.

The delegation also reported on the cooperation intention reached with Principal Oliva Quasimodo when visiting Dante High School in Italy. Dante High School will take YSU as a teaching practice base and organize students to visit YSU for a two-week Chinese learning every summer. YSU will take Dante High School as an international student base for overseas students. Dante High School will recommend several students to study at YSU each year.

Zhang Fucheng fully affirmed the achievements of the delegation’s visit and made detailed arrangements for the implementation of the results of the visit. First, the International Cooperation Division should plan and organize some cooperation well with countries along the route of “Belt and Road Initiative” and developed countries. Second, the International Cooperation Division should make good use of the limited resources of YSU to formulate special scholarship policies for foreign friendship schools and support the students from both sides in carrying out learning exchanges. Third, some YSU schools are expected to cooperate with the International Cooperation Division to do the publicity and mobilization in order to attract more teachers and students to participate in international exchanges and cooperation. Fourth, relevant schools of YSU should actively organize corresponding scientific research teams according to the needs of international cooperation in future and actively engage in research cooperation intentions of Portuguese and Italian universities.
