Overview

YSU Graduate School has overall responsibility for the discipline development, degree administration, graduate education, etc. Graduate School is also responsible for degree evaluation, comprising Quality Management Office, Degree Administration Office, Discipline Development, and Office of Academic and Degree Affairs.

YSU began providing master degree program in 1961, and resumed the program in 1978. YSU was the first batch of universities authorized to confer master’s degree. In 1983, YSU launched PhD programs in philosophy, economics, law, literature, science, engineering, management and art. The university now has 14 first-level disciplines of doctorate degrees programs and 1 professional doctoral program, as well as 30 first-level disciplines of master’s degree programs and 17 professional degree programs (master). The university now has 331 doctoral supervisors and 1180 master supervisors, and enrolls 8337 students, including 817 academic doctoral candidates and 15 professional doctoral candidates, as well as 3737 students under academic master degree program and 3269 students under professional master degree program. The university also has 499 students under the program of part-time professional master degree program and 86 overseas graduate students.

YSU has 5 national key disciplines, 5 key national defense disciplines and 16 provincial key disciplines. YSU’s Engineering, Materials Science, and Chemistry rank top 1% of ESI. In the fourth national discipline assessment exercise, YSU was awarded B and above in 8 disciplines, of which Mechanical Engineering was Class A, the top 10% discipline, and B+ in Materials Science and Engineering, the top 20% in China. YSU has 2 national excellent doctoral dissertations and 8 national excellent doctoral dissertations nominated. YSU has won 19 national science and technology awards consecutively since 2000, including 2 First Prizes and 9 Second Prizes of National Science and Technology Progress Award, 4 Second Prizes of National Technology Invention Award, and 4 Second Prizes of National Natural Sciences Award. YSU has undertaken 970 national research projects, including those funded by 973 Program, 863 Program as well as the National Natural Sciences Foundation and the National Social Sciences Foundation. In 2013 and2014, two scientific research achievements were selected in “China Top 10 Science Progress” and “Top 10 Science & Technology Progress of Chinese Universities”.
