The Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) announced the results of the election of new academicians in 2023 on November 22. Professor Liu Riping of the School of Materials Science and Engineering and State Key Laboratory of Metastable Materials Science and Technology of Yanshan University (YSU), and Professor Zhang Fucheng, President of North China University of Science and Technology and academic leader of YSU State Key Laboratory of Metastable Materials Science and Technology and the National Engineering Research Center for Equipment and Technology of C.S.R., were elected as academicians of the CAE.
Liu Riping, Chief Scientist of the National "973" Program, winner of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, academician of the Asia Pacific Academy of Materials, Alexander von Humboldt fellow with the German Aerospace Center, national level candidate for the New Century Hundred, Thousand and Ten-Thousand Talents Project, and 6th National Outstanding Professional and Technical Talent.
Liu has been engaged in research on metastable materials and their engineering applications for more than 30 years. Using unconventional methods, he has developed more than ten new special functional metallic materials, which helped overcome key material problems such as nuclear medium disposal, extreme environmental protection in space, and lightweight aircraft transmission mechanisms. These materials have also been widely used in aerospace, nuclear industry, chemical industry, steel, and other fields, making outstanding contributions to national economic development.
Liu Riping has won 2 second prizes of National Technology Invention Award, 1 second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award, 6 first prizes of provincial and ministerial level awards, and Hebei Outstanding Contribution Award for Science and Technology, with over 100 authorized invention patents. He published over 400 papers in well-known academic journals both domestically and internationally.
Liu Riping and his teammates worked together to establish the State Key Laboratory of Metastable Materials Science and Technology at Yanshan University.
Zhang Fucheng is currently a member of the Standing Committee of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, vice chairman of the Hebei Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, chairman of the Hebei Provincial Committee of the China Democratic League, President of North China University of Science and Technology, winner of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, expert in the field of the National "863" Program, executive director of the Hebei Iron and Steel Laboratory, academic leader of the YSU State Key Laboratory of Metastable Materials Science and Technology and the National Engineering Research Center for Equipment and Technology of C.S.R., Executive Director of the Chinese Society for Metals and Deputy Editor in Chief of the Journal of Iron and Steel.
