26 Dec , 2024

On December 24, a conference celebrating the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the China Education and Research Network (CERNET) officially commenced at the China National Convention Center in Beijing. The conference was to review the glorious history of CERNET over the past three decades, recognize organizations and individuals who have made significant contributions to its success, and lay out a new vision for its future development. Chen Zhili, former State Councilor and Vice-Chairman of the Standing Committee of the 11th National People’s Congress (NPC), and Wu Yan, Member of the CPC Leadership Group of the Ministry of Education (MOE) and Vice Minister of the Ministry of Education, attended the conference and gave remarks. The event also saw the presence of leaders and representatives from various institutions, including the MOE, the Office of the Central Cyberspace Affairs Commission, the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Ministry of Public Security, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Chinese Academy of Engineering, colleges and universities that host significant nodes of CERNET and members of CERNET. Funded by the Chinese government and directly managed by the MOE, CERNET is a national academic Internet developed and operated by Tsinghua University, Peking University, and other higher education institutions. It is also recognized as China’s first nationwide Internet. Spanning a history of thirty years, CERNET has evolved into the world’s largest national academic Internet, significantly fulfilling the needs of major national strategies and promoting the development of education, technology and talents.

YSU’s campus area network has been successfully connected to CERNET since 1997. YSU was the first among its peers in China to engage with the international Internet community through CERNET, becoming one of the pioneers in the country to informationalize higher education. In 2007, the CERNET node for the Qinhuangdao region was established at YSU. Over the years, YSU has actively assisted CERNET in node construction, maintenance, and operation. The University has also played a key role in expanding the number of node recipients, achieving full connectivity and coverage for colleges and universities in the region, and continuously enhancing the service capacity and quality of the node. This involvement has been vital to the construction and development of CERNET. Meanwhile, YSU’s campus area network has evolved into a crucial information infrastructure after years of continuous development. Notably, the University has made significant strides in advancing the digital transformation of education and achieving breakthroughs in the upgrading of its informational infrastructure in recent years. YSU has greatly enhanced its capacity to integrate network services and support, establishing a system that is “Internet-based, application-oriented, data-driven, and safety-prioritized” to facilitate and ensure the digitalization of education. These efforts have significantly bolstered YSU’s commitment to deeper digital transformation of education.

This time, YSU was honored for its remarkable contributions to CERNET in celebration of CERNET’s 30th anniversary. This recognition underscores the University’s dedication and significant impact on the development of CERNET. YSU will seize this opportunity to further highlight its strengths, enhance cooperation and exchanges with colleges and universities across the country, and collaboratively promote the development of China’s education and Internet sectors.

In the future, YSU will maintain its role as the CERNET node for the city and continue to support its scientific research and technological innovation. YSU will fully implement China’s national strategy for the digitalization of education, strengthen the integration of industry, academia, research, and application, and facilitate the development of core Internet technologies and Internet talent cultivation, making significant contributions to building an education superpower and Internet power.
