Time: 15:30, May 8th(Monday), 2017
Venue: 211, Building of Architecture
Lecturer: Chunsheng Lu (Department of Mechanical Engineering, Curtin University, Australia)
Abstract: Power law distributions can be generated from simple models and intuitive generative processes, however, understanding their origins, significance, and commonalities across disciplines is still a very important open problem in many areas of science. This talk will give a brief introduction on the relevant issues and especially, remind us of the importance of seeking out work in other disciplines, even if it lies outside our normal purview.
About the lecturer: Chunsheng Lu, who got his doctorate on Solid Mechanics from Institute of Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1993, now works for Curtin University, Australia. He has worked (or visited) in institutes and universities both in China and aboard, including: Institute of Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Science, Tohoku University and The University of Tokyo in Japan, Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand,MontanuniversitätLeobenin Austria, Brown University in the US, City University of Hong Kong, and the University of Sydney in Australia. He has long engaged in research in Damage-Fracture Mechanics and relevant fields, including: micro-damage evolution induced catastrophe, fractal fracture, the best statistical strength distribution, the predictability of earthquakes, the super-hard mechanism of nano-coating, failure mode identification and failure prediction of thermal barrier coatings, the barrier property and conductivity of polymer nanocomposites, the mechanical properties of semiconductor nanomaterials, and the decay mechanism of anode and cathode materials of lithium batteries. He has published in Physical Review Letters, Nano Letters, Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids, Journal of Geophysical Research, Applied Physics Letters, Acta Materialia more than 120 papers which were cited more than 2200 times. He was sponsored by NSFC (National Natural Science Foundation of China) Projects of International Cooperation and Exchanges---the former National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars B in 2008 and Hunan "Outstanding Overseas Teachers" project funding in 2012.
