Academic Report: Big Data Application and Scientific Personnel Training

About the lecturer: Ge Yu, a professor and doctoral dissertation supervisor at Northeastern University, received his Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree and in Computer Technology from Northeastern University in 1982 and 1986 respectively, and Doctoral Degree in Computer Technology from Kyushu University in 1996. His researches include database theories and application, parallel and distributed system, Cloud computing and big data management. Prof. Yu is now a member of China Computer Federation (CCF), President of CCF Shenyang Division, Deputy Director of Office Automation Committee, a member of CCF Technical Committee on Databases, a member of ACM and IEE, editorial board member ofIEEE TKDE, Chinese Journal of Computers, Journal of Software, andResearch and Development of Computers. He served as appraisal group member of the 5th and 6th Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, and appraisal group member of VLDB, ICDE, CIKM, and DASFAA. He published over 200 papers, 6 academic books on Distributed Database System, and 4 translations. Prof. Yu has won the awards of New Century Excellent Talents of Ministry of Education of China and Outstanding College Teachers.

About the lecture: Data Science, an emerging discipline on acquiring knowledge from data, aims to build Forecast Models to assist decision-making in the fields of production and management, health care, and scientific research on the basis of data acquired through statistics, machine learning, and computer science. In the Big Data era, Data Science offers theoretical support to Big Data application. The lecturer introduced the needs for Big Data application, main content of Data Science, R&D of projects, Big Data analysis technology, personnel training and its mode.
