Academic Report: Situation Perception and Geotechnical Structure Safety

Lecturer: Mowen Xie

About the Lecturer: Xie graduated from the Department of Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology, Hohai University in 1985; obtained Master degree in Geotechnical Engineering from Wuhan University, and Ph.D. from Environmental Research Center, Kyushu University, Japan. He was an Associate Professor at Wuhan University, a visiting professor at Kyushu University, intern researcher of the Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) in the United States, post-doctoral researcher at Kyushu University and University of Science and Technology Beijing, and special research fellow at the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS). In 2005, he served as a professor and doctoral dissertation supervisor at the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Science and Technology Beijing; and was selected into the new century talent support program of the Ministry of Education. What’s more, he is Vice Chairman of China Society of Rock Mechanics and Engineering Ground Rock Engineering; a member of the International Society of Rock Mechanics and Kyushu GIS Research Institute in Japan; a member of Geotechnical Branch Association, Geological hazards Society, GIS and the International Digital Earth Society.

He hosted 50 vertical and horizontal projects supported by the National Natural Science Foundation, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Land and Resources, Ministry of Water Resources, the Yangtze River Water Resources Commission, the Yellow River Conservancy Commission, China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research, China Power Construction Group, China Hydropower Engineering Consulting Group, the State Nuclear Power, Beijing Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research, Beijing Planning Commission, and Beijing Urban Construction department. He has repeatedly won second prize of National Scientific and Technological Progress Award and first and special prize of Metallurgical Science and Technology Award. His main researches are geological disasters, GIS and remote sensing applications and information systems development, environmental geotechnical engineering, disaster prevention and mitigation.
