Lecturer:Hu Xiang’en

Lecturer Introduction:Hu Xiang’en is now a tenure-trackprofessorof the Faculty of Psychology, Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Faculty of Computer Science, UofM. He is also a professor and the Dean of the School of Psychology, CCNU, a Senior Researcher at IIS, UofM, and the Director of ADL Joint Lab, UofM. He graduated from HUST with a MA Degree in appliedmathematics, and took MA Degree and PhD Degree in Social Science at theUniversity of California, Irvinein 1993. Hu was elected distinguished expert of Thousand Talents Program bythe Organization Department of the Central Committee of the CPC.

Prof.Hu has been engaged in cognitive psychology, computational behavior model, artificial intelligence,andintelligent tutoring research for nearly 30 years. Specifically,his researchincludesGeneral Processing Tree(GPT) models, classified data analysis, knowledge representation, computerized tutoring and advanced distributed learning.In lastdecade, Huhas presided overa total of 7.5 million U.S. dollars of research projectsoftheU.S. National Science Foundation (NSF),Institution of Education Sciences (IES), Department of Defense (DoD),Office ofNaval Research (ONR),andArmy Laboratory (ARL).Hu oncepresided over the STEMgrand Challenge project of the U.S. Office ofNaval Research (ONR), and was responsible for organizing GIFTAdvisory Committeeforthe U.S.Army Laboratory. He oncechaired the SCIP.

Lecture Content:Twentyyears ago, AutoTutor became the leading App of the IIS, UofM,helping toeliminatecomputer illiteracy. And it has been developed into an advanced learning environment framework which can be deeply explored, understood and implemented.In past 20 years, the R&D department of AutoTutor has won substantial research grant over 35 million dollars from the federal government.In this report, the lecturer will introduce three aspects of AutoTutor: cognitive learningtheory as the theoretical basis of AutoTutor,its technology and application in different fields.
