Speaker Introduction
Qiu Bing received his PhD from Peking University. He is currently an Associate Professor of the Humanities and Social Sciences Department of Beijing Language and Culture University, a supervisor of M.A study. He was included in the third batch ofTen-thousand Talents Program --“Young Talents”. His research interests are Chinese vocabulary history, language contact and corpus linguistics research. He has presided over many national research projects such as the National Ten Thousand Talents Program, the National Social Science Fund, the Humanities and Social Sciences Fund of the Ministry of Education, and the Beijing Social Science Fund. He is the author of “Multi-perspective Research on the Polyphony of Chinese Ancient Characters”. He was awarded the first prize of “Luo Changpei Linguistics Award” among other awards for his teaching and research achievements.
Lecture Content
As the product of the first large-scale language contact in Chinese history, the medieval Chinese translations of Buddhist scriptures display some unique characteristics. Based on the comparisons of the languages in Vatican and Han Dynasty, the influence of language contact at four different levels of new words, new meanings, new morphemes and new collocations in the verses of Chinese Buddhist scriptures were investigated, which not only presented the features of the characters in Middle Ancient Han to a certain extent. The investigation of the characteristics of Buddhist sutras also enriches the theory of indirect language contact.
