The board had a conference with YSU Vice President Yongsheng Zhao, Directors of administrative divisions, and Dean and department heads of School of Civil Engineering and Mechanics in the first reception room on the 21thFloor, the Century Building on the morning of May 31st. Vice President Zhao extended warm welcome to the board and introduced YSU. He mentioned that YSU attached great importance to professional certification and assessment, and gave preferential policies and support in terms of construction funds, teaching reform and teachers training. Prof. Yiyi Chen introduced the background, characteristics and development of professional assessment of Civil Engineering. He said that the aim of this assessment (certification) is to conduct an on-site verification of the education quality of YSU Civil Engineering and evaluate it strictly in accordance with the Standards of Engineering Education Accreditation. Guojun Du, Dean of School of Civil Engineering and Mechanics, on behalf of YSU, gave a report on the assessment (certification) of Civil Engineering, focused on the supplementary work after the submission of the self-rating report and the improvement made after last evaluation.

During the inspection, the experts looked through types of teachingarchivesand management files; observed 7 teachers’classes, graduation design classrooms, the internship base, and the laboratory; held a seminar with faculty and staff, communicated with employer representatives, graduates, and undergraduates. With a full understanding of the School of Civil Engineering and Mechanics, the experts inquired relevant issues about the self-rating report and ultimately formed their opinions.

The feedback meeting was held at the Century Building on the morning of June 2nd. Prof. Chen, read the“On-site Inspection Report of YSU Civil Engineering Assessment (Certification)”which informed the inspection results of the training objectives, graduation requirements, continuous improvement, curriculum system, teaching staff, supporting conditions and other key projects of Civil Engineering. He also proposed suggestions for YSU Civil Engineering education: improving the mechanism of information collection and feedback, strengthening the monitoring of education quality, improvingteachers’ practicalcompetence, and increasing experimental equipment (software) for undergraduates. Vice President Yongsheng Zhao thanked the experts for their hard work and pointed out this assessment led us to a better understanding of the future development of Civil Engineering. YSU would give full support in policy and funding to help the continuous improvement and further development of Civil Engineering to make it a professional brand and train more graduates for the society.
