[News from the News Center] On Sept. 28, the award ceremony of German Red Dot Award with a reputation of Oscar Award in design field was held in Singapore Red Dot Museum. Instructed by the teacher of the School of Art and Design, Wang Nianwen, the works selected by the Department of Industrial Design won over 5,640 works from 55 countries and regions around the world. “The pontoon bridge with safety airbag for rescue on ice surface” designed by Cheng Wei, Xu Li, Ji Chen, Lv Jiaxin and Wang Xiyu won the Best of the Best Red Dot Award. “The hook with airbag” designed by Song Zhicheng, Li Chengke, Liu Xue and Yang Qingling, and “Creative dishes for children use” designed by Shi Gaoshuai, Li Tiantian and Qin Wenjing won Red Dot Design Award respectively. The number of Best of the Best Red Dot Awards is only 39 and the winning probability is less than 1%.

At the invitation of Red Dot Award Committee, YSU team including Xu Li, Shi Gaoshuai, Cheng Wei, Song Zhicheng and Ji Chen led by Wang Nianwen went to attend this award ceremony. Currently, the School of Art and Design has won 5 Red Dot Design Awards, 21 other international awards, and more than 1,000 domestic industrial design awards. This is the highest honor that teachers and students of the School of Art and Design have received since the founding of YSU’s industrial design major. It is the result of constant teaching reform, innovative teaching mode and strengthening practical teaching in recent years, which indicates that the level of teaching quality in industrial design in our school is close to the highest international standards.
The Red Dot Award, which originated in Germany, has a glorious history of 63 years. Together with the German “IF Award” and the American “IDEA” Award, they were known as the world’s three most influential awards in the world. First, it is also known as the “Oscar of the international design community.” The Red Dot Award consists of three major parts: Product Design Award, Communication Design Award and Design Concept Award. The selection criteria are extremely demanding and strict, with the most authoritative “Quality Assurance”, which is the indicator of global product design and development trends. Winning the Red Dot Award is the highest honor in the design community.
In October and December 2017, the People’s Government of Hebei Province and the People's Government of Qinhuangdao City successively issued the Notice on Several Policies and Measures for Supporting Industrial Design Development. The notice pointed out that the winners of IF International Design Gold Award, Red Dot Star, Red Dot: Best of the Best Award would be granted 500,000 yuan and 250,000 yuan by the Provincial government and the Qinhuangdao Municipal Government respectively. For other awards including the IF and Red Dot Awards, the IDEA Award and the GMARK Award, each of them would be awarded 100,000 yuan and 50,000 yuan respectively.
