The 12th iCAN International Contest of InnovAtioN began in 2007 and is one of the quality engineering support projects of the Ministry of Education. Adhering to the spirit of “confidence, persistence and dream”, the competition advocates science and technology innovation and entrepreneurship to serve the society, improve human life, guide and encourage university students to be brave in innovation, discover and train a group of outstanding young people with innovative and entrepreneurial talents. The competition promotes and strengthens the combination of production, education and research in the high-tech field represented by the network and smart hardware, etc., promote the development of high-tech industries, and build an international exchange platform for high-tech innovation and entrepreneurship.
In 2018, the 12th iCAN contest included a series of phases: registration, project production, regional selection, and national finals. The contest focused on innovation which encouraged the team to carry out innovative ideas in design or theories on the premise of rationality and feasibility. A total of 450 teams from 19 universities including Tianjin University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, National University of Defense Technology, Shandong University, Sun Yat-Sen University, Jilin University, Dalian University of Technology, and Yanshan University were selected for the national finals. During the competition, teams from Northwestern Polytechnical University, Tianjin University, Shanghai Ocean University and other teams had some in-depth exchanges with the team of “Underwater Acoustic Communication-based Wireless Underwater Vehicles” about underwater acoustic communication and underwater robot construction in the future.
In the provincial selection competition, YSU 6 entries won the prizes, two projects “The wireless underwater robot based on underwater acoustic communication” (Instructor Li Xinbin, team leader Zhao Xiaoduo) , “AIBR Intelligent Spider Robot” (Instructor Meng Zong and Pan Zhao, team leader Cao Ziyi) won the First and Second Prize respectively, and selected to participate in the national finals. The teams received strong support from the School of Electrical Engineering and Automation Department.
