Overview

The School of Foreign Studies(SFS)was originally the Teaching and Research Office of  Foreign Languages at the School of Heavy Machinery of  the Harbin Institute of Technology. During the late twentieth century, the Teaching and Research Office was renamed the Foreign Language Department. A Foreign Trade English major was added in 1986, while Business English and Culture & Translation, as majors in Foreign Languages and Literature were added in 1995.SFS assumed its current name in 2000, and now offers courses in English, Japanese, Russian, German, French, and Translation (BTI) in six undergraduate major fields, among which, English major was selected as the First-level Undergraduate Major in the “National Double Ten-thousand Project”.

The SFS comprises the following departments: English, Japanese Department, Western Languages, College English I, College English II, and Graduate English. The School also encompasses the School Office and the Student Service Office. The SFS has been authorized to grant Masters’ degrees in the first-level disciplines of Foreign Languages and Literature. There are four Master’sprograms of second-level disciplines, namely English Language and Literature, Japanese Language and Literature, Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, and Russian Language and Literature, as well as an MTI Master’sprogram. SFS takes great pride in the excellence of its research and comprehensive range of studies that it offers. The school has seven research institutes, including the Institute of Foreign Literature, the Institute of Computational Linguistics, the Institute of Cognitive Linguistics, the Institute of Intercultural Communication, the Institute of Sign Language&Application, the Institute of MTI Education, and the Institute of Corpus-assistedTranslation Studies.
