Speaker Introduction:

Zhang Wei is a professor and a doctoral tutor at Beijing Foreign Studies University. His main research interests are functional linguistics, translation theory and teaching. He was one of the winners of the National Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation (2009). He was selected by the Ministry of Education for the “New Century Excellent Talent Support Program” (2010). Vice Chairman of the Chinese Corpus Research and Application Alliance, Director of the English-Chinese Comparative Research Association, Member of the Translation Theory and Teaching Committee of the Chinese Translation Association, Director of the Chinese Corpus Linguistics Research Society, Executive Director of the National Corpus Translation Research Association, Director of the Corpus and Intercultural Studies forum, researcher of China Foreign Language Evaluation Center, reviewer of project completion evaluation of National Social Science Fund, and reviewer of China Postdoctoral Science Fund. He is a anonymous reviewer of some prestigious journals: Foreign Language Teaching and Research, Foreign Languages, Modern Foreign Languages, Foreign Languages and Foreign Languages Teaching, Journal of the PLA Foreign Languages Institute, and Asia Pacific Translation and Intercultural Studies.

He has been presided over several research projects on multi-levels including two NSSF projects. His main works include: The Research on Cognition of Interpretation: The Relationship between Simultaneous Interpretation and Working Memory, The Construction and Application of Interpreting Corpus - Theory, Method and Practice, The Comparative Study of English-Chinese Translation Strategies and Its application among others. He has over 60 research papers published with some journals such as The Interpreter and Translator Trainer (SSCI), Translation and Literature (SSCI), Foreign Language Teaching and Research, Chinese Foreign Languages, Chinese Translation, Modern Foreign Languages, Foreign Languages, Foreign Languages and Foreign Languages Teaching.

Lecture Content:

The normative definition of translation is a concentrated expression of the construction of translational rationality, and it is also a historical contextualized understanding. Through reviewing the evolution of translation definitions, combined with specific translation examples, the translation research could be conducive to objective understanding from different perspectives from the experience summary to the rational interpretation and from the statute judgment to the fact description among others.
